he Philippine System of Identification (PhilSys) has introduced an authentication service, PhilSys Check, to improve the security of transactions through a digital signature in a QR code on PhilID cards and ePhilIDs.

This service is accessible via a website for various users and is complemented by fingerprint biometric authentication at Civil Registry System facilities in the National Capital Region for verifying the identity of document requesters.

Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, noted the implementation of these services as a step towards achieving the objectives of PhilSys, including improved service delivery and the prevention of fraudulent activities.

The PhilSys Check initiative is part of the PSA’s efforts to expand the reach of PhilSys, notably through mobile registration services in places designated as Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDAs). As of the end of 2023, there were over 50.3 million PhilIDs registered, with more than 45.6 million delivered. Additionally, issued ePhilIDs have exceeded 44.5 million.

The PSA is continuing to develop authentication services, emphasising the PhilSys Number and registered biometrics as the foundation for identity verification within the system. By January 5, 2024, more than 83 million Filipinos were registered with PhilSys, indicating a broad engagement with the digital ID system.

The registration process includes enrolling fingerprint, iris, and face biometrics to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. This approach is aimed at enhancing the integrity and reliability of the digital ID system, contributing to a more secure and efficient environment for transactions and services in the Philippines.
