Trade chief: Tech ‘can be our game changer’

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Thursday affirmed its commitment to digital transformation, saying technology is a key driver in an inclusive economy.

The statement followed Trade Secretary Cristina Roque’s participation at the Manila Tech Summit 2025 on Wednesday.

“We recognize that technology can be our game changer. That is why we see every fintech (financial technology) innovation, every e-commerce breakthrough, as a chance to uplift more Filipinos, especially women, youth and small entrepreneurs,” Roque said.

“We at DTI are striving to make this happen by ensuring that every Filipino, from the small sari-sari store owner to the next tech startup founder, can thrive in a digital economy,” she added.

The event gathered industry leaders, innovators and cross-sector organizations to explore strategies and solutions in a complex digital environment.

Among DTI initiatives to empower businesses and attract investment is the 5-Point MSME (micro, small and medium enterprise) Strategy — which covers utilization of Artificial Intelligence, digitalization, diversification, franchising, mentoring and providing strategic learning.

AI and digitalization will streamline information dissemination across the country, Roque said.

The E-Commerce Philippine Trustmark aims to build a secure and trustworthy online environment, Roque explained. The trustmark is a voluntary certification for online businesses that meet government standards for transparency and security.

Roque likewise cited the Create More Act and Green Lanes for Strategic Investments which have opened doors for projects in high-growth sectors to empower local communities and provide jobs.

Republic Act 12066, or the Create More Act, boosts digital transformation through tax deductions for e-invoicing systems, expands incentives for domestic market enterprises, supports export-oriented firms and streamlines tax collection mechanisms for digital services.

Executive Order 18 is a government-wide response to enhance ease of doing business by expediting, streamlining and automating government processes by creating Green Lanes for Strategic Investments.
