BSP flags risk of grey list return over online gambling

MANILA, Philippines — The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has warned that the country risks being placed back on the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) grey list if online gambling activities remained unregulated.

Asked on the sidelines of the 2025 Manila Tech Summit if unresolved issues on online gambling could trigger a return to the global dirty money watch list, BSP Governor Eli M. Remolona Jr. replied, “Yes.”

However, he remained optimistic that these issues would be resolved— most especially those illegal e-gaming platforms.

“We hope that someone can do something about that. We do not have authority on that,” Remolona said.

Sociocultural research firm The Fourth Wall last week revealed that following the central bank’s order to remove online gambling links, activity shifted toward unregulated platforms, recording a 40-percent surge. Meanwhile, regulated online gambling platforms were said to have experienced a 70-percent drop in players.
